T4.11 Weekly lottery for riders
The Center for Advanced Hindsight at Duke and the City of Durham did a pilot project in which they offered people riding the bus a chance to win $163 in a weekly lottery. (The City wants to reduce commuting to downtown to avoid building a $20 million downtown parking deck.) The GoDurham bus lottery created a game that made riding the bus a fun competition. Commuters invited to play the weekly bus lottery reported commuting by alternatives 19 percent more than those in the control group, and reported a higher level of happiness and lower levels of stress. There’s a story with the Mayor as well.
The Whatcom Smart Trips program lets people log their trips on foot, by bicycle, ridesharing or on the bus, and become eligible for a range of prizes. There are monthly drawings for a $250 cash prize and drawings for $1,000 four times a year, as well as discounts, gift certificates from local businesses, and special gifts for participants who make more than 200 smart trips a year.
