B4.6 Tax heating oil
Use the proceeds to fund rebates and grants for conversions to heat pumps.
The Seattle City Council recently passed a $0.24/gallon tax on heating oil, collected from distributors. There are roughly 18,000 heating oil tanks in the city. The proceeds will fund rebates and grants to help 3,000 households convert to electric heat pumps, including covering the cost completely for 1,000 low income households. (The law also requires decommissioning or upgrading all underground oil tanks by 2028.)
(There are roughly 4,000 buildings heated with oil in Thurston County.)
