B5. Sustainable Energy Utility
Create municipal utility that just provides renewable energy, without buying out PSE.
Ann Arbor residents approved a measure on the November 2024 ballot to authorize creating a municipal sustainable energy utility. (It passed with 79% of the vote.) It would not replace or buy out their current utility, but would exist alongside it, as an opt-in, supplemental municipally-owned energy utility that provides 100% renewable energy from local solar generation, battery storage systems and networked geothermal systems installed at participating homes and businesses in the City. It could also invest in energy efficiency and electrification in local homes and businesses, offer on-bill financing for its customers, and take other immediate steps to speed up the use of sustainable energy in the city.
