A5.1 Reforestation & afforestation program *
Develop a coordinated reforestation/afforestation program. Begin by identifying priority areas where reforestation and afforestation may have carbon reduction benefits. The Tree Project supports urban volunteers in raising seedlings for planting in rural areas.
The Many Trees Project is raising, planting, and distributing fruit and nut trees locally. (They have already distributed over 1,700 free chestnut saplings to 250 people.)
A new non-profit plans to plant and protect one million trees in Whatcom County over the next five years. (That’s about 3,300 acres of forest.)
Ann Arbor is giving 10,000 free seedlings away to residents of the county who are interested in planting them.
The Steering Committee for the implementation phase of the local climate mitigation plan has authorized the Thurston Regional Planning Council to do a white paper about this idea. (There’s an overview of the issues here.)
