Create a local property tax reduction or credit for new buildings that meet an energy efficient performance standard.
Virginia and Maryland have enabling statutes that allow municipalities to grant property tax credits, or establish separate tax rates, for energy efficient buildings. Certifications recognized include LEED, Green Globes (GS), and National Green Building Standards (NGBS). The cities of Roanoke, Charlottesville, and Virginia Beach in Virginia, and Baltimore, Howard, Anne Arundel, and Montgomery Counties in Maryland, have active ordinances for property tax exemptions.
The Nevada Governor’s Office of Energy Green Building Tax Abatement Program awards partial property tax abatements to new or existing buildings across the state that meet the requirements of LEED or Green Globes rating systems.
Harris County and the City of Houston, Texas, grant property tax abatements for new and refurbished commercial facilities obtaining LEED certification.
