Increase allowances for cross-laminated timber in building code.
(Washington has already adopted Code standards that apply to the use of Mass Timber.) Seattle is in the process of deciding whether to adopt them in its code. Their website has background material about the issues.
Horizon Partners is adding four stories of mass timber construction to a building in Tacoma’s Heritage District, and proposing a fourteen story building in the area.
The EcoBuilding Guild’s Building Innovations Database has case studies of a couple of groundbreaking Northwestern mass timber buildings, including the Bullitt Center in Seattle, a six story net zero commercial building which was finished in 2013 in compliance with the provisions of Seattle’s code at the time.
The twelve story Framework tower in Portland ran into cost and financing problems, and was recently cancelled.
