A4.8 Ban wood pallets
Require the use of alternatives like reusable, recyclable plastic, aluminum, or corrugated paper pallets.
Carl Pope’s Climate of Hope says that 50% of the hardwood used in the US goes into wood pallets, and half of those are thrown away after one use. (p. 178) There are some more numbers in a recent blog post promoting an alternative, “Wooden Pallets Cost Us More Than You Know!” It says “Nearly 2 billion wooden pallets are currently in circulation in the US with a majority of them replaced each year. This consumes an estimated 50 percent of the country’s annual hardwood harvest and is equivalent to 7.6 billion board feet of lumber.” (Unfortunately, it doesn’t cite a source.) (IKEA now uses corrugated paper pallets.)
