B2.4 Commercial lights-out
Promote “lights-out” policy that encourages businesses to turn off their signs and other lights at night when they are closed.
The University of British Columbia has experimented with trying to get people on campus to turn off the lights when they leave rooms.
The Audubon Society keeps track of cities with programs that work on turning off building lights at night to help reduce migratory bird collisions and deaths. The International Dark-Sky Association and local chapters work to reduce light pollution and conserve the experience of the night sky for future generations. They and the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America developed a Model Lighting Ordinance to help municipalities develop outdoor lighting standards, and they have an overview of outdoor night lighting issues (including some statistics about wasted energy) for policy makers
