Tumwater’s commute reduction program now includes a cash incentive for employees who buy a plug-in vehicle and drive it to work. It’s up to $360 for a plug-in hybrid and $720 for the all electric, if you drive it to work thirteen or more times a month in each of the first twelve months after you purchase it.

Durham, NC did a pilot program in collaboration with Duke’s Center for Advanced Hindsight which created a personalized route with mapped options, time comparisons, and benefits. Commuters in the group that received the personalized route reported using travel alternatives, instead of driving alone, 12 percent more than employees in the control group that did not receive it.

“Nudging the commute: Applying behavioral insights to transportation demand management”, one of the webinar from a recent Behavior, Energy, & Climate Change conference, focuses on using the insights from behavioral economics to encourage people to use alternatives to commuting in single vehicles.
