T2.7 Carpooling
Work regionally to increase the HOV and HOT lanes available during peak times for car shares and carpools to reduce single occupancy trips.
The EPA’s Best Workplaces for Commuters program has a report on best practices for supporting carpooling. “Why Do They Ride with Others? Meta-Analysis of Factors Influencing Travelers to Carpool” looks at the recent global research on factors underlying this choice. The 3rd section of “The Benefits of Carpooling” actually provides a survey of the research on how to increase it, with references.
A number of companies have developed website and/or apps to support carpooling, such as Rideshare and Scoop. Commute with Enterprise provides carpooling management services to companies, helping employees form carpool groups and providing them with rental vehicles.
